especially in insecure areas.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Children and child soldiers continue too often to be victims of violence.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Their rights will remain under constant threat without more concerted efforts to end impunity and restore the justice system.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>But the most precious gift anyone could give to the children of Afghanistan would be an end to the conflict.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The quest for peace will continue to involve efforts at many levels &#8212; from community outreach in districts and villages to concerted engagement with Islamabad and other capitals on the shape of a political settlement.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Afghanistan&#8217;s conflict was not home-made: it behooves the world to go the extra mile for peace &#8212; for the sake of subsequent generations.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraphtext\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><strong style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #231f20;\">Christopher<\/span><\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-family: Geneva; color: #cc9900; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"> <\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #231f20;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Alexander<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"> was Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary General in <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Afghanistan<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"> from December 2005 until May 2009.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>In this position he was responsible for political affairs, including elections, disarmament, governance, regional cooperation, rule of law and police reform, as well as cooperation with ISAF.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Prior to this assignment he served as Ambassador of Canada to <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Afghanistan<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"> from August 2003 until October 2005. He was number two at the Canadian Embassy in <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Moscow<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"> from 2000 to 2003 and second secretary at the same mission from 1993 to 1996.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>A career diplomat, Mr. Alexander joined the  <a style=\"text-decoration:none;\" HREF=\"\" TITLE=\"\" >Canadian Foreign<\/a>  Service in 1991. He received a BA from <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">McGill<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">University<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"> in <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Montreal<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"> in history and politics in 1989 and an MA from <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Balliol<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">College<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"> at <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Oxford<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">University<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"> in <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">England<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"> in philosophy, politics and economics in 1991. Mr. Alexander was chosen as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Davos<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Switzerland<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"> in 2005.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>He grew up in <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Toronto<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">, attending the University of Toronto Schools (UTS) from 1979 until 1985.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>He has recently moved back to <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Canada<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"> with his wife Hedvig Christine Alexander \u2013 who worked in <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Afghanistan<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"> for seven years, most recently as Managing Director of Turquoise Mountain.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Their daughter Selma Zolaykha Alexander was born in April 2009.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>He is now writing a book on <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Afghanistan<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Chris Alexander was recently selected to be the federal candidate for Ajax-Pickering for the Conservative Party of Canada.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraphtext\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #231f20;\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"ServiceList\" style=\"text-align: center;
